Selecting Your Fragrance & Creating Your Own DIY Candle
During our DIY candle-making class, you’ll create your own custom candle with everything selected exactly to your liking. Choose your vessel, your wax color, your decorations, and perhaps most importantly, your signature scent! Before you start creating your blend, you’ll have plenty of time to explore our wide selection of fragrance oils. Not sure what you like? Here’s some popular scent combinations to help you get started:
- Sweet: Think vanilla bean, coconut, brown sugar, or even fruity options like apple or cherry! Perfect for creating a yummy “Sugar Cookie” or “Apple Pie” inspired candle.
- Warm & Spicy: Combine cinnamon, cardamom, clove, or amber to create a uniquely spicy, warm, and sensual scent.
- Earthy: Fragrances like sandalwood, cedarwood, patchouli, and vetiver can be combined to create a candle scent that is woodsy and enchanting.
- Masculine: Tobacco, leather, and musk are classic masculine scents that perfectly set the mood for a cozy evening in.
- Floral: Pick your favorite flowers like lavender, rose, or jasmine to create a one-of-a-kind floral scent just for you!
Whether you’re into scents that are romantic, tropical, fresh and clean, or something else entirely, we’ll help you design your own candle scent exactly the way you imagine it. Reserve your candle-making class in our Lower Manhattan or West Village studio today!
All About Candle Scent Blending: Top Notes, Middle Notes, and Base Notes
When creating your custom candle, it’s helpful to know how fragrances are structured. Much like perfumes, candle scents are made of three layers: top notes, middle notes, and base notes. Top notes are often the first scents you can smell, usually brighter or more citrusy scents like bergamot, peppermint, or lemon, and give you the first impression of a scent. Middle notes form the main part of your fragrance, and candlemakers often use florals, spices, or fruits for these notes. Base notes are the deepest part of the fragrance and last longest after your candle has gone out; these tend to be richer scents like sandalwood and vanilla. During our candle making workshops, your teacher will help you choose and blend the best fragrances for each layer, creating the perfect scent for your custom candle.
How to Blend Candle Scents: Test Out Your Scent Creation
When learning how to make your own
candles at home, many choose to let their creative side out and experiment on the spot with help from our expert teachers. However, some prefer a more methodical approach using blotter strips. Here’s how:
- Grab a few blotter strips and add 1-2 drops of your preferred fragrances onto them separately.
- After allowing them to dry for 10 seconds, hold them together and smell your blend.
- Adjust the ratio, adding more fragrance or new fragrances until you find the perfect combo.
- Write down the ratio you went with on the strips (e.g. 2 drops of vanilla, 1 drop of amber, 4 drops of apple).
- Recreate your fragrance by multiplying the ratio into the required amount of fragrance for your candle.
